Food Price profiteering

When the wholesale price of onions is about Rs 3/Kg, I fail to understand why organised retail outlets like Big Basket and Reliance Fresh are selling onions at Rs 16-18/Kg.

Why should they be allowed to charge 600% profit over the wholesale price?

Isnt onion an essential commodity and by law Profiteering on essential commodities should be a crime. more

Is it a really an essential commodity? I don't think so.
It is pity that the growers are not getting even their cost of cultivation even though at retail the commodity is sold at such cost. The government should look into the issue seriously and ensure that the farmers get reasonable price of their produces. more
It is for the good administrators to see that in the name of value addition "cost addition" is not done. more
To understand the pricing, we have to study the practices followed in purchasing and selling and built-in malpractices besides the logistics and wastage costs..... Yes, it is pathetic that farmer gets ₹ 1 per kg, and consumer pays ₹ 16-18 per Kg. I believe the act, procedures exist but enforcement... requires will power (political and administrative) and .... more
This is pathetic . Annadatta is suffering and the user is crying only the people in power enjoys keeping hand in hand. more
What is more astonishing is the fact when you and others in the Circle can see this open looting of traders at the cost of poor farmers, our rulers and politicians failed to take note of this great injustice! Of course, the farmers and common man have now taught a lesson to the BJP in the recent Assembly election for this and other such injustices, shortsightedness, omissions and inactions. more
