dear sir, Food shortage is a direct indicator of mismatch between supply and demand and also lack of purchasing power with poor people. For a country like India with so many mouths to feed, we need to find revolutionary means do increased food production using our limited land/natural resources. I believe the per acre yield in India Is one of the lowest in the world. Second reason that aggravates this problem is extremely poor infrastructure (roads) which raises the distribution costs significantly, not to mention perishable nature of food products. Even imports won't help if we don't have roads to transport the produce. Lack of good roads also limits the ability of farmers to reach out to a larger market and producers to procure the best quality at lowest cost. Thirdly, agriculture sector in India is the biggest repositer of disguised unemployement where young people are generating neglible value. This generates demand side issues related to poor purchasing power. Fourthly, poor policy making has resulted in lack of large scale industrial food production and segmented land holdings. Rice which used to cost Rs.30/40 has now sky rocketed to Rs.60/70. Turdal costs Rs.90 to Rs.100. I am a vegetarian but with these extreme costs one has to think twice to buy any items. The PDS has stopped for white card holders and one has to buy from the outside market which prices the items at higher costs. In short, the middle class is suffering a lot. I hope to see some important changes on this. more
