FIR in wrong side driving is a good idea

For the 1st time ever, Delhi Police is filing FIRs for driving on the wrong side of the road. No more just paying a Rs 5,000 fine and moving on; offenders are now being booked under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash driving.

The two cases were recently registered in Delhi Cantonment and Kapashera. This shift comes after 3.05 lakh cases were reported in 2025 alone. Since traditional challans haven't acted as a sufficient deterrent, the police are now resorting to criminal charges to save lives on the road.

If you are caught, your vehicle could be seized immediately, and you could face up to 6 months in prison.

Because an FIR is registered, the violation cannot be settled through a simple online payment. You will have to physically visit the police station and appear before a magistrate in court to secure bail and get your vehicle released. more

Delhi Police's bold move to register FIRs under BNS Section 281 for serious wrong-side driving cases (starting January 3, 2026) is a welcome escalation—with up to 6 months jail, fines, and vehicle seizure—after over 3.05 lakh cases reported in 2025 alone, fueling deadly head-on crashes. While stricter penalties help, the root causes persist: poor road planning with excessively spaced U-turns, missing/inadequate service lanes, and faulty designs that force drivers into dangerous shortcuts for short distances or to bypass jams. Adding more visible staff—through expanded Home Guards or contractual auxiliaries for quick, low-cost deployment at chaotic intersections—would provide the immediate deterrence that changes behavior on the spot, complementing tech enforcement. Ultimately, combining tougher laws, better infrastructure (more frequent U-turns, proper service roads), and increased on-ground presence is the real path to safer Delhi roads—no shortcut justifies risking lives! Drive responsibly. more
Only two cases reported till now as against average of 850 cases daily in 2005. Also, please remember More Power More Corruption. There should be balance in power granted more
Here no FIR only jail for crossing red light. more
Delhi police should be given the powers to challan the wrong side drivers & also the powers to impound the vehicles so that they do not repeat this type of mistakes. Due to these type of drivers the innocent citizens/ law abiding drivers pay the price & suffer. This is a noble move for the safety of the citizens of the country. more
