Electoral Funding Root Causes - Inputs on Solutions

Based on your inputs, here is a summary of key root causes for the current state of Electoral Funding:

1. Lack of centralized guideline on fund sources
2. No laws to force the parties to disclose the amount of funding collected
3. Some businesses are happy to fund political campaigns so that they could ask for favours once the party in in power
4. Cost of fighting election is increasing steeply
5. No limit on the number of parties contesting elections
6. Political parties do not need to file income tax returns
7. Muscle power and threatening tactics are used sometimes to force businesses to donate
8. Lack of political will to take any steps in this direction

Based on these root causes, let us identify solutions that can be shared with the Government and Central Election Commission for consideration.

Solutions for Electoral Funding Best way to resolve this problem of funding for this unwanted expenditure is to total ban of propaganda during election. Why they have to spend on such wasteful propaganda at all? Only group meetings will be permitted during election and prospective candidate should take the trouble on other times (Prior to elections) so that people will know him/her by their work this is applicable to political parties also. If spending is not permitted, where is the question of funding that comes? Candidate will get free access to TV and Radio channels of government and news media to tell their side and that should suffice. I have seen that candidate does not win because he has spent a lot of money. Voters vote on merits of the work as we have seen this in recent elections. As voters become more and more educated this wasteful expenditure on publicity will prove to be counter productive. Giving gifts and such many gimmicks must be banned in this also. If this is done Elections will be not very expensive. If any candidate or party found spending on propaganda that candidate will be cancelled from the elections. This will make it easy for true but not rich candidates to contest elections; which is the need of the time.
