Educational Reforms

I was horrified to see one of the proposals to the Govt. on educational policy. That was 'uniform' syllabus. How can we have a uniform syllabus through out the country when we have such diversity? The child needs to be taught about his/ her own region first and then move out. Be it language, culture, food habits- things change from place to place. How many of us are aware of the science behind our 'food'? What a Punjabi eats and what a Rajasthani eats are different. In certain places the differences are more stark. In Karnataka for example, Coastal people use coconut, coconut oil, boiled rice as staple. In Southern interiors (old Mysur region) 'ragi balls' are staple. In North Karnataka, it's the 'jowari roti'. This ignorance is leading to the changes in food habits, which has a direct effect of the health.
Be it weather, geography, flora and fauna, food, culture, social behavior all these can be taught only with a regional syllabus. While we can have topics which are 'common' they need to reflect how they are applied/ observed locally.
Today we have become 'victims' of standardization a direct impact of industrialization. It would be disastrous to apply it to humans. more

Uniformity should be followed but to some extent, - English and Hindi should be mandatory subjects until 10th or even 12th. - Rest all subjects should be taught in English. - Local languages should be separate and mandatory subjects. This will ensure that people know English, Hindi and the level of knowledge in other subjects is also same. At the same time, separate subjects as regional languages if made mandatory, should solve the problem. more
Hindi should be made mandatory until Class 10th at least. In South India, people hardly speak Hindi because their school syllabus supports local languages and Hindi is still not mandatory. This creates a huge communication gap due to geographies. more
Shivanand, I differ from your view and I think the example you gave was inappropriate in this context. These days people move across cities and villages and hence it is more appropriate to have uniform syllabus, so that people can move freely without impacting the child. The standards of state boards are much below that of ICSE or CBSE. more
