Disaster Management in India - Key Issues

Dear Friends

The Uttarakhand tragedy last year and the J&K Floods this month lead us to this subject of working together with the Government on making Disaster Management in our country more effective.

Let us consider disasters that have happened in our country in the recent past (Earthquakes, Terrorist Attacks, Tsunamis, Floods, Train/Air Plane related Accidents, Stampedes etc). Based on them and others, let us outline current issues/problems in the area of Disaster Management.

Once we identify the issues, we will work on the Root Causes and Solutions and submit the final whitepaper to the PMO and ministries associated with the subject.

I look forward to your inputs!

When metrological dept gives warning the social workers are happy. The preventive action will not be published by medium. Only media highlights the visits of VIPs sitting in the helicopter. So everywhere advertisement requires. We can distribute the relief as was done by PM recently to the bank accounts. If politicians are not turning to the site to take stalk of the relief work apart from personal damages next time mla/ mp post will be lost. Also there must be accountability as seen in monsoon precautions canals are cleaned only after flooding and the valuable water joins the sea. more
There should be a disaster management subject at schooling which teaches how to handle various disasters. more
the socialist welfare state cannot provide welfare since it has proved to be corrupt and apathetic. The INCA empire was socialistic. children did not care for their parents in INCA empire and there was a 'I give a damn' kind of attitude which we see around us in India. That is why 200 spanish defeated a 1.2 crore INCA. That is why British placed India in the socialist mould. make groups of people educated , responsible and independent. e.g. gandhiji's gram swaraj. they will not need too much help and the govt will have to deal with smaller crises. more
Disaster management was earlier treated as a place to park retired loyal politicians. Remember the Emergency Management research Institute of AP and the 108 Heart Brigade. Remove all politicians from the controlling positions. Ban the involvement of Equipment manufacturers to influence purchase of equipment. This was rampant in the EMRI. Train all NCC Cadets in Emergency management. Disaster management and First Aid. Each College should have a committed cadre to do such activity. more
