Delhi Cars on odd and even days

Great to see the responses and thanks .Emergency situations require emergency measures. There is no easy way out. The problems enumerated in the posts and the solutions offered should be considered seriously by the authorities. Problems are going to be there and no doubt solutions tried, discarded and reinvented. And this order is on an experimental basis for 15 days only .Lets study the issues and then comment. The BRT was a good idea but see how it didn't work. Moving Public Vehicles to CNG was another but it gradually met with success and hardly anyone now remembers the problems which were there and resolved as there was a will to do it.This whole process should be monitored by the Honorable Delhi High Court to ensure Center State politics is removed and people work positively ahead. The Delhi traffic Police is stretched with limited manpower. Let the Citizens of Delhi and Political parties, Mohalla sabhas send volunteers in thousands to assist the Traffic Police.

Most important for all of us Citizens of Delhi is to understand that for a better quality of life and Air, we will have to alter our way of life.Sacrifices will have to be made. Life will NOT be the same.We will all have to change. If it means going out in your car on alternate days then it may be done.Taxi Cabs are often cheaper than taking your own car.

When many of us go abroad don't we change according to the rules there? We are used to Right side steering wheels. Its the opposite there!! Yet we adapt don't we?

So lets wait for the rules to be framed and suggestions made by citizens taken into consideration, lets see the experiment for 15 days and maybe , just maybe we can all breathe easier. We must . And we can. This is all in our overall interest and we must make our suggestions . more

I beg to differ on one point Mr. Pandhi, the analogy which you made for left-hand and right-hand drive cars abroad. It just does not fit. Do we have any research suggesting that most of the air pollution in Delhi is due to private passenger vehicles? Or are we simply acting on the basis of common knowledge that cars pollute, we use cars so reduce the number of cars plying on the road by hook or by crook. Most of us shall be willing to adapt and sacrifice for the sake of better air quality. But I have not seen any post or article or news report till now which informs us by how much are we going to reduce the air pollution by if we sacrifice the use of our cars. Why don't I see any subsidy on Mahindra Reva E2O? I was just going through their website, the dreary little thing costs a staggering INR 7,51,800 in Delhi! Why would anyone in his senses pay that much for a car like the E2O? Why no research in alternate fuels. Back in mid 2000's there was news about bio-diesel. There is a plant, Jatropha, which can be used to produce diesel. This diesel produces less pollutants as compared to traditional diesels. Why did the government never paid any attention in promoting the cultivation of Jatropha? I know this sounds selfish, but why do I compromise on my comfort and convenience? While the politicians continue to use their convoy of countless cars with both odd and even numbered 'VIP' plates to pay a visit to their distant relative's place. While I wait for the convoy to pass in a dreadful bus overflowing with people with hardly any room to even keep my foot on the floor, risking being robbed of my personal belongings just because my car has a number which is even and the day suggests only odd number cars ply? WHY? more
