Can't justify, but can explain only. Most likely this is a government Bank. If so, then, as pointed out by Mr. Singh, they print passbook, free of cost. Passbooks more paper saving and duplicate printing saving. How? Account details already vouched by customer account linking though barcode reading machine within the printer. Barcode scanned, when the book gets fed into the printing machine which prints just the updated transactions. Government banks mostly allow such machines, becoming non-functional. Myself have visited State Bank of India finding that printer gone kaput! Private banks have therefore mostly replaced the passbook system with net banking. more
The printing of account statement on passbook is free. I addition, many banks send monthly account statements by email which is also free. Banks also charge Rs. 5/- plus GST per quarter for SMS alerts and this service is optional. Banks charge if a statement for other than regular ones is asked for. Levying charges for this special service is correct. Those critical of this should not ask for this additional service. more
Wow, you are lucky. Indian Overseas Bank charged me Rs.175/- per page for my bank statement, can you believe that???? more
Banks fail to do their prime task of selling Loans to rightful citizens and also to get thevrecoveries against those loans from them. If they d so then they wont have any problem. But cover up those expected losses they openly LOOT the common masses thru a flleet of illogical charges debited in the form of penalties. If the Consumers join togeter to launch a campaign and alo file a case against tha banks they could be sued for what nonsense the authorities are up to more
Service cost. All aimed at paperwork reduction. Most customers take printouts through internet banking, a free self-service, available, whereever, and whenever. Technology makes everything available on demand. Customer gets notified about every transaction, should she opt-in into SMS too. Why always be critical. more
