Affordability of Medicines in India

Most of the critical life saving medicines are not manufactured in India. With this post we would like to seek your inputs on what should be done by Government, Industry, others to make such medicines affordable in India.

We will then share the collective with different stakeholders in the Government so actions can be taken on this front.

We look forward to your inputs!

Yes, of course, prevention is always better than cure - no question about that. I believe, daily Puja /prayer/meditation (twice, 30mts-1 hr each or more), light freehand exercises (~15-30 mts daily) and brisk walking (~4-5 Kms in one or two instalments) should help tremendously to keep doctors away. If one is old and/or diabetic, and living in over-polluted cities like Delhi/NCR, vaccines for Swine Flue, Hepatitis - A&B, Pneumania are recommended. Sleeping on time, lightening and cleansing oneself and taking an early morning bath also go a long way. However, having said all of the above, our Governments must measure up in controlling drug prices by detecting and curbing all kinds of implicit and explicit malpractices by the Pharma Companies in collusion with the Medical Practitioners and all medical industries and professionals. Senior Citizens, children and women without any insurance cover or good incomes should be covered under some insurance (in line with ESI). Ultimately, India must plan within next one decade or so, for adopting the best of the British or Canadian models and practices for providing Healthcare to the Citizens. more
Well said Moondraji. With this formula I have seen people living upto age of 85 + with diseases like coronary blockages and other serious diseases. Second reason of not getting cures from a particular disease is to treat only the disease and not the cause of disease more
The best way to keep medical expenses under control is to not to fall sick. Easier said than done? No. Adopt a life style less expensive and healthy, thus save money both ways, on your life style and on your medical bills. Dr G L Moondra more
Friends it is not only medicines whose prices are disproportionate to their material and production cost. Take the price of eye glasses. The material of frame for spectacles and price of the frame pricing formula is an example of proverb AANDHI peese Kutta khae? more
Those who go into finer part of cost of manufacturing of medicines and the cost at which it comes to customer, there is wide difference. In this regard, it is almost a scene of monopolistic market. Govt should review this aspect threadbare and see that margins can be controlled and reduce supply chain cost. There are many medicines, which are manufactured in India. It the moral responsibility of any Govt to provide better better health services where medicines play a very important role. more
