A Note of Caution on BHIM App

The Government has enabled the BHIM App with Aadhaar and plans to launch the Biometric based Aadhaar Pay payment module. Aadhaar Pay service will enable people to make and receive payments using their Aadhaar number and the Biometric technology without the need to carry their mobile phone.
People may not remember their 12 digit Aadhaar number and may use a slip of paper to read it while entering, thus allowing video capture of the number easily. This is where the danger of identity theft exists. Fingerprint verifying security measures are likely to store your fingerprint data so that it can be compared to the print that is trying to gain access through the security measure. The fact that your fingerprint data could be stored up in a cloud for comparison, raises additional security concerns, because hackers might be able to obtain that data in a security breech similar to what we often see with major companies.
Biometrics are becoming an increasingly accepted form of reliable security, replacing passwords and other safeguarding solutions in many instances. You can always change your password after being hacked, but you can’t change your fingerprints. more

I am referring to the simple BHIM app. Not Aadhaar based one. more
I did not have a debit card. To use this app, I needed one and hence got it. I transferred about 3 times some amount for my medicines purchase. It was convenient.....BUT Next day someone, TOTALLY unknown to me send a request for Rs.8000.00. HOW? How did he get my details? Which end the bank played the trick? The bank account from where I transferred? Or form the receiving bank? Or someone else who HAS/HAD access to the transactions? And his details were not revelled the app, not in the SMS I received from the app! Some unknown name only was there! If this is what is going to be achieved by digitalisation, how do we save ourselves? No doubt ALL initiatives are good in my opinion But are we proceeding at the correct speed? Or over speeding? Are all such new initiatives being studied properly? I am least bothered, under the prevailing conditions, even if a bank looses billions: But if one individual even looses Rs.100 this way, is that correct and acceptable? PM and FM need to ask for more details of such happenings and put a team of experts for immediate rectification. Otherwise PM will have more problems in hand in addition to what he already has, starting from JULY 2017! more
