A very good information Durga ji. Gelatine which is generally available in the market in bulk is of animal origin and if people in India come to know of it, many people will stop buying these capsules. Moreover, gelatine capsules will not be that hard and can not be broken so easily like I have seen. more
Manufacturing of empty capsule shells is itself a cottage industry in UP/Bihar, as far as I know. I know that gelatine is sold in bulk in Tilak Bazar, Delhi. And people buy this without a pharma manufacturing certificate. No one knows what other components go into manufacturing of capsule shells. We have all read repotrts of haldi and such products filled in such shells and sold in rural areas as health capsules. Even empty shells are sold in bulk in Tilak Bazar and pharma markets at Lajpat Rai Market near Red Fort. Therefore, it is always good to buy medicine capsules of only of reputed manufacturers and from reputed shops only. more
The problem is - " Who checks that the quality of capsules used for medicines is made of bio degradable material?" Being a Petrochemical Engineer myself, I have seen some capsules which if you just press, break easily. Generally if the capsules are made of gelatin, these will not break so easily. is there any authority who checks the quality and approves it before it is packed. ? There are so many Ayurveda medicines these days which are sold in capsules and which have to be taken for longer periods. I don't think it is safe to consume these capsules for longer periods unless their quality is controlled. These capsules are in different color ( who knows if the color used is food grade or not). more
I was also told that capsule shells are manufactured from gelatine. Is there truth that plastic goes into manufacturing of capsules? more
