We should not look at the past with rose-tinted glasses. Even in olden days, the kings and those close to him, the nobles and courtiers had all the wealth in their hands and the under-privileged and the poor lived a difficult life. The riches seen in the courts were what made an impression on the early visitors and led to colonisation and plunder. Also, taking resources away and bringing manufactured things back was possible only after industrial revolution in Europe and better shipping. In the days before that, the activities always tended to be localised. Plunderers certainly came, stole, destroyed what they could and left but could not do it in any kind of systematic ongoing manner. Coming to the present, the activities in the tiny sector (self employed mostly) are cash based and leave no financial trace. These activities are never captured by GDP figures. GDP is only a computation and blaming GDP oriented thinking for poverty seems to be misplaced. Also people in this sector are trapped in poverty and have no way of escaping. To move people away from poverty, small and medium industry/businesses with local investments (not of the stock market variety) must be encouraged and systems put in place to support them (please see my post of August 19, 2019 on Tackling unemployment). These sectors give higher employment per Rupee invested compared to large industries and automatically distribute wealth to a larger section. Focus on goods made for internal consumption rather than exports (Make in India and Make for India). Let us keep automation in manufacturing to the minimum at least in this sector. Also make them part of the banking/financial system so that they are counted by GDP calculations. more

We all know that India is not a poor Country , but was made poor under invaders ' Rule . The geographical befits , natural wealth , Labour Skills should have brought back the Golden Era of our previous History. IT IS HIGH TIME, EVEN NOW, THE CITIZEN OF ALL FIELDS ARE TO RE ORIENT TO THE OBJECTIVES OF OUR FREEDOM FIGHTERS IN THE LIGHT OF THE " QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT " that achieved independent Rule in the Country before the situation stands worst than the rule by Moghals and Britishians . Our P.M., Sri Narendra Modi also staged this need and called for cooperation and coordination of people in his speech on the eve of 75th memorable anniversary of " QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT " and is for us to also share this inspiration . more
