It is the system described pre-para that got destroyed by human intervention; all in the name of development. Rampant cutting of trees of rain forest (for profit), cultivating crops that destabilize top soil, encroachment of flood plains for human habitat, resorts, cultivation and for sand mining have together worsened the impact of the disaster in 2018, worst in the history of Kerala. Rivers ‘sand mined’ for construction of roads or buildings and urban waste (mainly plastic) dumped in rivers impede smooth flow of water besides polluting it. With flood plains encroached, rivers change course, flood the land and/or uproot trees. Landslides are also caused when water bodies or wetland are leveled by mining slopes/ hills (against law or on exemptions obtained from geology dept.?). more
