26% Maharashtra households surveyed have one or more individuals with COVID/viral symptoms

January 6, 2023, New Delhi: Maharashtra has so far reported 110 cases of the JN.1 COVID variant with total number of active COVID cases near 900. The LocalCircles platform has been seeing a surge in conversations related to viral illnesses and COVID amongst the state residents over the past 3 weeks. With free Government testing of those with symptoms becoming increasingly rare and most avoiding taking the COVID RT-PCR test on their own, the official COVID case data may be significantly understated.
To understand the prevalence of viral illnesses in the state better, LocalCircles has conducted a fresh survey which received over 3,000 responses from residents located in 26 districts of Maharashtra. 67% respondents were men while 33% respondents were women.
The survey first asked residents of the state, “How many individuals do you have in your household in Maharashtra who currently have one or more COVID/ flu/ viral fever symptoms like fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, joint pain, bodyache, respiratory issues, etc.?” Out of 3,801 Maharashtra residents who responded to the query, 63% stated “no one, thankfully”. Of the remaining, 5% indicated 2-3 individuals in their household; 21% stated 1 individual and 11% of respondents did not give a clear response opting for “can’t say”. To sum up, 26% of households surveyed in Maharashtra now have one or more individuals with viral/COVID like symptoms.

In just six months, the percentage of households in Maharashtra that have one or more individuals down with COVID/ viral symptoms has risen from 16% in August 2023 to 26% currently. In effect, data shows that 1 in 4 households surveyed have one or more individuals unwell with viral or COVID like symptoms.
In summary, the fact that 1 in 4 households surveyed have one or more individuals with COVID/ viral symptoms shows that health authorities have to be more vigilant and encourage people to report all serious cases or seek medical help early when necessary. In addition, free testing should be made available at Government hospitals so those with symptoms can easily get tested and awareness about such testing facilities be created.
Survey Demographics
The survey received over 3,000 responses from residents of Maharashtra located in 28 districts of the state. 67% respondents were men while 33% respondents were women. The survey was conducted via LocalCircles platform and all participants were validated citizens who had to be registered with LocalCircles to participate in this survey.
