January 25, 2025, New Delhi: Feedback from parents in North India on LocalCircles indicates that a large number of FIITJEE centers have unexpectedly shut down. The closures are reported to be primarily due to financial constraints and unpaid salaries but it has left many students and parents in a difficult position especially with crucial exams approaching. FIITJEE provides coaching for the prestigious IIT-JEE exam and the NEET exam. Several others like Allen, Aakash-Byjus, Vidyamandir, Narayana, PhysicsWallah and several others provide similar coaching services.

Over the years LocalCircles has continued to receive complaints about poor operating practices like overcrowding and poor infrastructure, over charging besides, poor teaching quality, forcing the students to seek alternative coaching centers. In some cases, citizens have complained on social media about how they have been denied refunds of fees paid for the trial period.

Through a survey LocalCircles has once again strived to find out what the parents feel about the coaching centers their children/wards or even immediate family members have been studying in or have stopped going to. The survey received over 10,000 responses from citizens located in 241 districts of India. 67% respondents were men while 33% respondents were women. 46% respondents were from tier 1, 37% from tier 2 and 17% respondents were from tier 3 & 4 districts.

58% of parents surveyed have had broken promises, trust and transparency issues with coaching institutes in the last 24 months

The survey asked citizens, “What are the kind of issues you or your family members have faced with competitive exam coaching institutes in the last 24 months?” This query received 10,741 responses with 58% of parents surveyed reporting broken promises, trust and transparency issues. The data shows 21% of parents have had issues with the (1) “teaching staff changes/ effectiveness”; another 21% have had (2) “refund issues”; 38% of respondents hinted at (3) false promises, trust and transparency issues and 20% of respondents indicated that they had faced all the three issues during the last 2 years.

58% of parents surveyed have had broken promises, trust and transparency issues with coaching institutes in the last 24 months
41% parents surveyed also report issues with refunds and teacher effectiveness at competitive coaching classes

Analysis of the responses received to the question “what are the kind of issues you or your family members have faced with competitive exam coaching institutes in the last 24 months?” shows that the biggest issue faced by 58% of parents is “false promises, trust and transparency issues”; 41% indicated problems with the “teaching staff changes/effectiveness issues” and 41% have had “refund issues” when they wanted to pull out their children/ward from the coaching institute. Most institutes have a policy of refund if the students/parents are not satisfied with the outcomes, but this is not adhered to.

In summary, while there is an urgent need for the Government to intervene on the FIITJEE issue, there is a broader need for intervention in how coaching classes are conducted, the standards and consumer protection. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs need to work in collaboration and set rules for how the coaching industry needs to operate in India with clear standards, do’s and don’ts. Till that is done, incidents like FIITJEE will continue to occur impacting students negatively.
