AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal cleans drains on Gandhi Jayanti- Economic Times

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party volunteers led by former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal today undertook a cleaning exercise on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

Kejriwal, who took up the cleaning of a choked drain at BR Camp in New Delhi early in the day also had breakfast with the safai karamcharis and families of the area after cleaning the drain with workers.

Party leaders, and AAP MLAs across the national capital participated in the cleanliness drive.

Incidentally, the party undertook the cleanliness drive in the 7, Race Course Area, in the vicinity of Prime Minister's official residence, after Narendra Modi announced his plan to start the Swachh Bharat campaign in Valmiki Basti.

The next part of the campaign will be the monitoring of the cleanliness campaign started today, the party said.

"India will only be possible if the concerned authorities are ready to go beyond symbolism. AAP will soon announce its plan of effectively monitoring the cleanliness drive and how the concerned civic agencies can be made accountable for performing their primary duty," an AAP spokesperson said.

The party said it will continue to emphasis on improving the plight of safai karamcharis, who seem to have been forgotten in the entire exercise.

"It is important to give them respect and improve their living conditions, give them permanent jobs and enhanced salaries, in case the country is serious about the cleanliness drive," the spokesperson added. more

If the concerned authorities are ready to go beyond symbolism: This can only be ensured by a corruption-free government. When do we get that? more
AAP, if they stick to what is promised today in supporting the clean India campaign , will do a world of good to both AAP and the nation. Let them also be the watchdog and raise alerts if the campaign fizzles out as in the past. good luck! more
Commendable job undertaken for cleaning of chocked drain at BR camp, by AK/AAP. But at the same time as rightly said by AK/AAP, exploitation of safai karamcharis can no longer run parallel with swach Bharat: 'cleaning drive'. The party said it will continue to emphasis on improving the plight of safai karamcharis, who seem to have been forgotten in the entire exercise. Now there is a dilemma on, the more we emphasis on safai abijan the more exploitation/accountability of safai karamcharis come to limelight. 30 yrs on temp jobs under contractors, getting less than half the amount on what they sign for as salaries, & no other basic facility being temp employee/worker. Focus on the staff, entrusted with the work of keeping the city clean, is of paramount importance. Only then you can hope for the success of this campaign. more
CAUTION AGAINST SEPTIC TANKS FOR SHOUCHALAYAS: It is well known that 15,000 liters of good water is used to flush 35 kg feces and 500 Litre urine per person per year. One click of flush drains out 18 liters of filtered portable water. Septic tanks can be dangerous as the can pollute well water especially in congested and low lying areas. Besides this, the periodic cleaning of septic tanks by dumping of “septage” which has highly concentrated pathogens like E.Coli which can cause significant health and environmental damage. On the other hand there are immense possibilities of using human and animal urine by using separation toilets. It involves a simple modification of regular commode allowing urine and solid human waste to be collected in seperate tanks. It is often not recognized that human urine contains 11-1-2% respectively of N-P-K (Sodium-Phosphorous-Potassium) which if properly harvested can be a good source of fertilizer for agriculture which the government currently subsidizes incurring huge economic loss. An average person voids 350-700ml of urine 4-7 times a day. The normal range is 800 to 2000 milliliters per day with normal fluid intake [www.nlm.nih.gov /medlineplus/ ency /article/ 003425.htm] [en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ Fluid balance‎] Human urine being acidic can to an extent be used in alkaline soil. A dairy cow excretes 25 liters urine/day or 9000 liters annually. This urine being alkaline can be highly useful for correcting (acidic) soil. more
