Noida/Greater Noida Sustainable Cities

Sustainable Cities Need People
Centric Administration

An Open Letter to:

District Magistrate Mr Brajesh Narain Singh, IAS
CC: CEO, Noida Mr Alok Tandon,
CEO Greater Noida, Mr Narendra Bhooshan, IAS

Dear Mr Singh,

Please accept my congratulations for successfully placing Noida and Greater Noida on the United Nation’s development platform. The selection of the twin cities for the membership of the Global Sustainable Cities 2025 Initiative is a rare distinction which should make the citizens of these cities feel very proud. It is also places a greater responsibility on all those, including yourselves, who are responsible for the development of these cities

The challenge now is to develop the cities into world class cities capable of competing with the 24 others on the list to bag a place among the great cities of the world. This is not an easy task and would require the united efforts of the district administration, the three development Authorities, business, civil society organizations and the people at large.

As a member of a civil society organization I am confident that, given the chance, civil society organizations and educational institutions, would be able, and willing, to take up responsibilities and deliver results in various sectors of development. A united effort by all stakeholders including industry and the bureaucracy would ensure effective planning, implementation and timely completion of the job.

The twin cities have been chosen in the University category, one of the six categories which have been set up for intensive development. The sustainable city concept is closely related to the development of a smart city. To become a smart city a city would have receive A+s in all, if not at least a majority of the 17 Global Sustainable Goals which were drafted on the success of the earlier Millennium Goals which ended in 2015.

As in the case of the Smart City programme the Global Sustainable Cities would require the power of the people to achieve success. As Tanja Feldmann, Director, Sustainable Urban and Industrial Development, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, has said that “if a smart city is not as per the needs of its citizens then it is completely not a successful smart city. Citizens’ acceptance should be the main focus while transforming a city into a smart city.”
