Making our home Earthquake resistant

Seems like lots of earthquakes have hit Delhi recently in last 3 weeks and some scientists are suggesting a bigger one may be on the cards.

Does BIS recommend retrofitting as a method to make a building earthquake resistant?

For those who are not familiar, in retrofitting, lanter bands are inserted in the doors and windows above where the roof starts. The corners of the four walls of the building are joined together by a lanter band. The difference is that lanter bands use iron rods, which are much stronger.

Is there anything else that experts in this circle or BIS recommend? more

BIS has a number of codes relating to earthquake- zones, forces to be taken, design recommendations, detailing ; there is a code for retrofitting too. It seems all Indian Standards formulated by BIS are available free on BIS web site. more
High rise buildings need some stipulation regarding the height and number of floors. For such building these stipulation made compulsory. RERA should take care of these. more
Mr. Arun Kumar has rightly mentioned that BIS standards exist. It is duty of builders to follow these standards strictly while constructing any building and concerned statutory bodies must ensure that builders constructs all buildings following BIS standards. But, is this happening in India? LC must see that concerned departments acts to see builders construct all buildings following BIS> more
