Let the rice and wheat be fortified

Iron deficiency anemia continues to be major public health problem in India. It is estimated that about 20% of maternal deaths are directly related to anemia and another 50% of maternal deaths are associated with it.
Let the rice and wheat - our two major food items, be fortified with iron to get rid of this menace of Iron deficiency anemia. In the long run collectively we will save a lot in terms of medical expenses. more

In different areas of our country we have different grains as staple food hence we need different grains to be fortified by minerals especially iron. Even middle class people have this problem, it is not restricted to poor who can not buy food. more
As seen, majority of iron deficient anaemia cases are found in starving people, who are unable to feed themselves and their family members three times a day and forget about the nutritious food. Fortification of the cereals would make no difference for those people who are forced to starve because of our faulty system of wealth distribution. It is shameful that even after 70 years of independence, our government could not take care of these helpless people and ensure that none of this country sleeps without food. more
I think there is a better way to manage issue of fortifying wheat & Rice. We should empahsis Indian council of Agricultural Research to Develop/make a special variaty wheat & rice which are rich in all minerals. These can be sold in a spearate packing just as corn flak is being done. Let people have choice which wheat & Rice to eat as prices will differ. Poor needs minerals but they should be able to pay for it. more
Fortification of grains is not good proposal. Over many years these staple goods rae consumed as they are. they have to be supplemented by vegetables / dals/ meat/ milk etc. more
How costly is the process. Can government take it up and recycle the grain at the source to avoid unnecessary double handling leading to additional cost pilferage and loss on Handling. more
