A common question that people ask Dr Google- “How Long Does One Need To Sleep?” The simple answer is till the body feels refreshed and energetic. Sleep is of insufficient duration or quality if the person feels drowsy and irritable despite the duration of regular sleep.
Centers in the brain are essential for the process of sleep. And as such, the abnormalities of sleep lead to disorders of nervous system. And some of these disorders lead to common disorders like asthma (due to an imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system). Both, short sleeping hours (<6hours) and prolonged sleeping hours (>9 hours) have been found to up the risk of stroke. Similarly, people with dementia are also well known to have sleep disturbances which are very disturbing to them as well as their family and caregivers. Many people have experienced “hangover like” headaches, fatigue (tiredness), mood disorders and balance issues when the sleep is ‘diseased’. Contrariwise, people with serious brain disorders like stroke (paralysis), trauma, dementia (forgetfulness) have problems with their sleep.
One needs to avoid those brief naps, avoid coffee/tea and alcohol prior to sleep, and most importantly cut ourselves away from those bright screens (televisions, computers and handsets) well in advance before sleeping. Exercise always triggers the good hormones that help us sleep better. And as they always say-Never Take Your Troubles To Bed.
