Farm And Food crisis due to lockdown

Farm crisis in Karnataka, much like all of rural India, is concerning. Procurement centres not operational. Ready to harvest paddy, Maize, Chickpea, peanuts have no takers. Flowers, fruits (summer crops), veggies being dumped.

APMC yards Are open in many places for barely a few hours & see no footfall of traders, farmers say. With processing units closed & inter-border restrictions, sale/export of fruits like grapes, pomegranate, tomatoes has hit a roadblock.

Maize that should be at least Rs 2000/quintal being offered for Rs 800/quintal by farmers yet there are no takers. Plantain being sold at a paltry Rs 5-6/kilo causes huge losses to farmers. If they stop growing it now due to losses, imagine the cost we will pay in the near future.

Small & medium farmers cannot afford to pay for cold storage. The longer they keep their harvest, the more money they are losing, compelling them to either dump their produce or sell at a loss. Farmer leaders worry if govt doesn't help with procurement, situation will worsen more

Very painful- but they should conserve by using cold storage not dump it- the help will take time to reach the farmers and procurement has also started though offtake is slow due to Corona restrictions more
Cold storage if useful for some perishables, should work hand in hand with farmers ,instead of charging a fixed rental there should be a profit sharing arrangement between the farmer and cold storage. more
There should be coordinated efforts to ensure supply chain of perishables is well addressed. Such initiatives should be taken by large hypermarket chains in such times to use their strength of supply chain more

This is war like situation. You don't expect to make plan and then fight the war. Decision to lockdown was need of the time. more
